Description
Like a lot of other minerals, zinc is significantly depleted in US soils: A carrot today may have 95% less zinc than a carrot grown sixty years ago.
Phosphate fertilizers and sewage sludge used in conventional agriculture are also highly contaminated with cadmium, which competes with zinc, inhibiting its absorption. Due to poor diet, soil depletion, food processing, aging, and stress, zinc deficiency is widespread. Statistics indicate average intake ranges from 47% to 57% of Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) — not enough to prevent outright deficiency.
Zinc is one of the foundation nutrients needed for building a strong immune system. Even a small deficiency can significantly impair immune function. Research over the past twenty years has shown that having adequate zinc reserves in cells inhibits replication of the coronavirus family of viruses. If a virus can’t replicate (reproduce itself), it can quickly and easily be eradicated by the immune system.
Zinc is involved in more body functions than other minerals. Experts estimate that over 10,000 enzyme reactions require zinc — many involved with immune defense and repair. Zinc is essential for growth, development, sexual function, immune function, and chemical detoxification. Without adequate zinc, healing cannot take place.
Even “healthy” diets can be problematic. The richest food source of zinc is red meat, followed by fish and chicken. Vegan and vegetarian diets often rely heavily on grains and soy; the phytic acid in these binds with zinc in the intestines and prevent it from being absorbed. Vegetarian diets are also high in copper and low in zinc. For these reasons, the government recommends vegetarians get twice as much zinc as non-vegetarians.
Zinc is an essential immune boosting mineral that plays a role in a wide range of biological functions. Most notably, zinc helps support T cell function, which elevates the body’s ability to combat infection and is instrumental in healthy cell proliferation. It is also an excellent antioxidant, ridding the body of free radicals and reducing toxic overload.
