Description
Research has shown berberine supplements may help with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and skin issues. Studies have also shown that it helps people with type 2 diabetes by regulating blood sugar.
High blood sugar levels also causes excess insulin production. Insulin is the hormone that moves sugar from the blood into our cells for energy or fat storage. Too much insulin can lead to issues like high cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and blood clotting.
In one study, researchers gave obese human subjects 500 mg of berberine three times a day for 12 weeks. These people lost 5 pounds, lowered their triglycerides by 23%, and reduced their cholesterol by 12.2% without dieting or exercising.
Losing 5 pounds may not seem like a lot. However, berberine has started to change their body chemistry for the better. This could lead to more weight loss in the future.
In another study, men and women aged 32 to 68 were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. They experienced significant weight loss. The study involved participants who had recently received a diagnosis.
The subjects took 300 mg of berberine three times a day for 12 weeks. They did not receive any other interventions. Their average BMI decreased from 31.5% to 27.4%, and other metabolic markers also showed improvement.
